The Clifton Foot Harriers
The Clifton Foot Harriers were formed in 1894 when that hunt changed from a 16.5 inch Beagle pack formed early that century.
The Harriers were drafted from other packs and hunted successfully for over 80 years.
From the earliest days, the Clifton Foot was a popular hunt, drawing large crowds to its meets.
The Clifton developed a strong reputation for its hounds, providing excellent sport and winning prizes at shows.
As a result, Clifton Hounds were much sought after for breeding: indeed, the modern Beagle owes much to the infusions of small Harrier blood from the Clifton.
By the mid 1970's it was hard to breed the smaller Harriers needed for a foot pack.
Of the remaining Harrier packs in England and Wales, only 2 hunted on foot, while the remainder were followed by a mounted field.
In 1977, the Clifton Foot Beagles were re-created and continue to hunt the country South and West of Bristol.
